12/10/09 - Mason structure fire, 632-638 Peachtree Pl
On a bitterly cold and extremely windy weekday, the Mason Fire Department responded to investigate a possible structure fire at 632 Peachtree. Information given was that people in this unit had been doing some plumbing work and now had black smoke coming out of a dryer vent. This building is a four unit apartment building under a common roof with a fifth unit added on to the north side of the structure. First arriving command found the unit above 632 completely involved with heavy fire that was now venting through the roof of the main building. Mutual aid manpower was requested from the neighboring Leslie Fire Department, Delhi Township Fire Department and Dansville Fire Department. First arriving Engine 809 connected to a hydrant just to the north of the fire and made an aggressive attack on the main body of fire in the 2nd floor unit. Tower 808 set up and began attacking the fire that was venting from the attic. Engine 21 from Delhi Twp connected to a second hydrant nearly a block south and supplied Tanker 811 which was supplementing a 2 1/2 feed to the tower from Engine 809. Since no personnel were entering the structure due to the compromised roof, when Leslie Engine 740 arrived they were directed to the rear of the structure to hit hot spots from that vantage point. Once the integrity of the roof was determined, all companies were working doing extensive overhaul and picking up. In spite of the reduced manpower available during a weekday daytime fire, and the high winds with bitter cold temperatures, an aggressive effort made what appeared would be an all day event into a relatively quick knockdown.
