1/12/05 - Williamston multiple vehicle crash & MCI, I-96 mile marker 116
An unseasonable warm front swept through mid michigan on Wednesday, January 12, 2005. Temperatures reached into the 50's in the afternoon creating rapid snow melt. The resulting fog patches caused near zero visibility along I-96 around 3 PM. Unsuspecting drivers became involved in multiple chain reaction collisions on both the eastbound and westbound lanes of the Interstate. Media reports stated over 200 vehicles were involved in these crashes, resulting in 1 fatality and over 30 injuries. 113 police officers responded from 8 different agencies and the highway was closed for over 10 hours. 13 fire and EMS services responded to this incident.
