5/12/22 - NIESA commercial structure fire, 1435 E. Grand River
At about 2:10 AM on Thursday, May 12, 2022, both NIESA stations were alerted to a structure fire at Red Cedar Antiques, 1435 E. Grand River.
Auto aid was sent from the Meridian Twp Fire Department. This is only a block from NIESA Station 61, so command received an update quickly that flames and smoke were visible from the building. Command requested additional mutual aid for manpower and tankers from Dansville and Mason. The first arriving units had heavy fire showing from the middle of the "B" side of the building. This was coming from a walkway enclosure between two office style structures. The visible fire was knocked down quickly, but the fire had already eaten into the attic space of the buildings on both sides. Due to the heavy content load of this antique store, personnel had difficulty finding a way in to access the fire. Additional tankers were requested on mutual aid to supplement the hydrant being used as command prepared for an exterior attack. Fire vented through the roof as the structure on the "C" side became fully involved. Firefighters cut access holes in the walls to extinguish the blaze from the outside. At one point, fire apparatus had to be moved out from under electrical wires when the wires going across Grand River Ave caught fire. Once the main body of fire was controlled, personnel accessed what they could for overhaul, but excavation equipment was called to the scene to achieve complete extinguishment.
