8/25/21 - Leslie extrication, US-127 mile marker 59
At approximately 10:30 PM on Wednesday, August 25, 2021, the Leslie Fire Department and Lansing-Mason Ambulance were dispatched to a serious crash that occurred on northbound US-127 near mile marker 59. A pickup truck traveling southbound in the northbound lanes collided with 2 northbound cars in a head-on collision. The pickup started burning with occupants trapped in the burning truck as well as the car lodged under it. Mutual aid was immediately requested from the Mason Fire Department for manpower and the Delhi Twp Fire Department for an ambulance. A Michigan State Police unit came across the crash right after it happened.
With the assistance of citizens, police were able to keep the fire at bay and pull the driver from the burning truck. The car lodged against the truck was starting to burn with a victim heavily trapped, so police enlisted the help of a tow truck that was stopped in traffic to separate the vehicles. Police used extinguishers to put out the fire in the car. When the fire departments arrived, they immediately began suppression of the fully involved pickup truck while extrication equipment was set up to begin extricating the driver of the car. Survival Flight was requested to respond as well as additional ambulances. Extensive extrication was required to remove the occupant of the car, firefighters were able to free him just as the helicopter was arriving. 2 patients were transported with critical injuries, 1 by ambulance and 1 by helicopter. An additional driver had minor complaints and 2 police officers were treated for smoke inhalation and minor burns. Once all patients were treated and hazards secured, firefighters stood by with lighting equipment to assist police with the investigation and clean up of the crash.
