7/12/21 - Troy gas tanker fire, I-75 at Big Beaver Rd
On Monday, July 12, 2021, at approximately 1:15 PM, The Troy Fire Department was dispatched to the report of a tanker on fire on Northbound I-75 near Big Beaver Rd. Upon arrival, firefighters found a tanker truck had collided with the median wall and was fully involved. Firefighters assisted with getting the driver away from the fire and to EMS treatment, he was transported to the hospital for additional treatment. The truck was carrying 10,000 gallons of gasoline and 4,000 gallons of diesel fuel. Crews quickly deployed handlines and master streams to contain the extension of the fire and cool the area around the tanker. The Oakland County Haz Mat Team was called in to assist. The tanker truck burned for just over 2 hours before the Holly Fire Department arrived with a foam trailer. The fire was then completely extinguished with Class B foam. The Troy Police Department, Alliance Mobile Health, Oakland County Hazardous Materials Team, Troy DPW and MDOT all assisted with this incident. Once the fire was out and debris cleared, an investigation was conducted to assess the damage to the highway surface. It was determined that all lanes, both northbound and southbound were damaged, as well as the median wall. MDOT estimated repair costs at $1.5 Million to replace the damaged portion of the highway.
