3/18/21 - Delta Twp pallet yard fire, 4201 N. Creyts

At 2:41 PM on Thursday, March 18, 2021, the Delta Twp Fire Department was dispatched to an outdoor fire that would take hours to extinguish. Firefighters were sent to 4201 N Creyts Rd for a fire in a pallet yard at Kamp's Pallet Division. A large pile of pallets was burning, fed by strong winds which was blowing the flames and smoke toward an exposure business and parking lot off Lansing Rd. As firefighters began an attack on the fire, mutual aid was requested to respond from the Windsor Twp, Grand Ledge, and Benton Twp fire departments. The wind blown smoke created near zero visibility on Lansing Rd forcing officials to close the road to all traffic. The stubborn fire continued to resist firefighting efforts, and additional aid was requested from the Lansing, East Lansing, and Delhi Twp fire departments. The Eaton Rapids Fire Department was also requested to bring the air trailer. A front end loader was brought in to start separating the large pile of pallets as firefighters continued to use master streams from the air & ground. The Capital Region International Airport was requested to send a crash truck for large scale foam application, but the strong winds and voids created by the pallets allowed only limited success with this tactic. As soon as the crash truck pulled away, the flames again showed from the center of the pile. Firefighters continued to dump thousands of gallons of water as the front end loader continued to break down the involved pile of pallets. Firefighters worked into the darkness of evening before the fire was finally declared out.
