5/7/20 - Rives-Tompkins Twp structure fire, 5900 Grand River Rd
The Rives-Tompkins Twp fire department responded to a structure fire, with automatic mutual aid, at 5900 Grand River Rd, shortly after 1:30 PM on Thursday, May 7, 2020. The first arriving units found the original pole barn structure involved had completely collapsed already and strong winds were driving the fire into a nearby mobile home structure. As firefighters began their attack, additional departments were requested for tankers and manpower. The winds continued to drive the flames eastward, fully consuming the mobile home. Embers blown into a grassy area started a grass fire which threatened neighboring out buildings. The fire also attempted to extend into a pole barn east of the mobile home, but firefighters quickly discovered the extension and extinguished it. Additional arriving mutual aid apparatus were directed to respond to neighboring properties to protect the potential exposures. An extensive amount of overhaul was required to make sure the fire was completely extinguished and would not rekindle with wind fueled embers. The Rives-Tompkins Twp Fire Department received mutual aid from Blackman-Leoni Public Safety as well as the Henrietta Twp, Springport-Clarence Twp, Parma-Sandstone Twp, Hamlin Twp, Onondaga Twp, and Leslie fire departments. JDART responded for rehab and Jackson Community Ambulance provided EMS standby.
