5/12/15 - Delhi Twp commercial structure fire, 2415 N. Cedar St
At approximately 2 PM on Tuesday, May 12, 2015, the driver of a car traveling northbound on Cedar St near Delhi Commerce Dr experienced a medical condition causing him to veer off the road and strike a vacant commercial structure. Upon impact, the car struck the building's utility services, sheering off the natural gas meter which caused an immediate fire. Civilians came to the rescue of the driver, removing him from his vehicle before it became completely involved in fire. The Delhi Township Fire Department responded, with automatic aid from the Lansing fire Department at 2:02 PM. On arrival, command reported a working fire in the A-B corner of the building with possible extension into the attic. As fire conditions in the attic continued to worsen, additional mutual aid was requested for crews from Mason & Windsor Township to assist on the scene. A defensive attack was made until visible fire was knocked down and it was no longer an unnecessary risk for personnel to enter. The natural gas line to the building was broken off and could not be shut off by firefighters. A protective line was kept in place to break up the leaking gas as Consumers Energy personnel worked to shut off the line at the street connection. The driver of the vehicle was transported by EMS for evaluation of his medical condition. A dog in the back of the car perished in the crash.
