11/22/11 - Dansville barn fire, 3790 Iosco Rd

At 2:11 PM on Tuesday, November 22, 2011, the Dansville Fire Department with automatic aid from the Stockbridge (SAESA) Fire Department responded to a barn fire at 3790 Iosco Rd. A large plume of black smoke blew southeast and was easily seen from miles away. Command requested an additional tanker from the Leroy Twp (NIESA) Fire Department, and a few minutes later requested the east side of the Tanker Task Force which brought additional aid from the Williamston (NIESA), Fowlerville and Unadilla Township fire departments. Tanker Task Force command requested an engine from participating agency Meridian Township Fire Department to set up at a dry hydrant nearby for tanker refill. FIrst arriving units reported a 40x60 barn about 70% involved with an exposure barn less than 20 ft from the involved structure. Initial attacks were hampered by the fire's impinging on high voltage power lines directly overhead. An urgent call was put in for DTE to mitigate this problem. Firefighters set up lines to bring down the fire and protect the exposed structure and adjacent fuel tanks. After the flames were knocked down and overhauling operations began, a 55 gallon drum was found to be leaking it's contents into the water runoff. The Ingham County Haz Mat Team was requested to respond for this as attempts were made to control the water runoff on site.
