7/23/04 - Delhi Twp barn fire, 2611 Okemos Rd
At approximately 1 PM on Wednesday, July 23, 2004, the Delhi Township Fire Department responded to a barn fire at the Sugarbush Supplies Co, 2611 Okemos Rd in Alaiedon Township. First arriving units found light smoke showing from a pole barn type structure. Firefighters immediately made an interior attack but were unable to access the fire which had gained headway into the conceiled attic space above them. When the roof began showing signs of possible collapse, interior crews were withdrawn and this became an exterior operation. Crews attempted getting to the fire from an adjoining roof but were again unable to reach the seat of the flames. The aerial masterstream from Delhi's Truck 21 was put into action in what was now a completely defensive fire. Mutual Aid tankers and manpower were requested from the Mason and Dansville fire departments. An additional tanker was requested from the Williamston Fire Department and the Meridian Township Fire Department was requested to respond with an aerial truck. The tanker shuttle supplied enough water to use both aerials to knock down the bulk of the fire, firefighters then completed extinguishment and overhaul operations when it again became possible to enter.
