1/20/20 - Mason extrication, southbound US-127 MM 63
A vehicle traveling northbound on US-127 suddenly crossed the median, causing a 3 car crash at approximately 5:10 PM on Monday, January 20, 2020. The Mason Fire Department and Lansing-Mason Ambulance Service were dispatched with a report of one of the cars rolled over, on fire, with a person trapped. When command arrived, it was discovered there was no person trapped and bystanders had extinguished the fire with snow. There were 3 patients total, with 2 of them seriously injured. Mason firefighters completed many tasks as they arrived on scene, including triage and helping stabilize patients, assisting EMS when they arrived with patient packaging and transport, a preconnect was pulled for fire control since one of the vehicles was still smoking, traffic control to close the southbound lanes and one northbound lane for scene safety and to assist traffic that was already jammed up with getting turned around and on their way, extrication for a door removal on one of the cars to give EMS more room to remove a driver, and scene lighting for the police accident investigation team to collect information.
