11/11/18 - Mason corn dryer fire, 104 S. Lansing
Just before 1 PM on Veteran's Day, Sunday November 11, 2018, the Mason, Dansville, and Delhi Township fire departments were dispatched to a fire in a corn dryer at the Eaton Farm Bureau Co-Op at 104 S. Lansing St. First arriving command confirmed there appeared to be a fire smoldering in one of the corn dryers. As command officers formed a strategy, firefighters began laying out lines and preparing for extinguishment. Personnel began the process of emptying the corn dryer through small access holes along the bottom. The conditions inside the dryer were closely monitored with thermal cameras as the smoldering flames were introduced to unburned product and fresh air. It didn't take long for flames to take over, all personnel were withdrawn from around the dryer when fire began venting from the top. Additional mutual aid was requested for Leslie Fire Department's aerial, which was in Mason preparing for the Veteran's Day Parade, and for manpower from Delhi Township. Firefighters performed an exterior attack until the visible fire conditions were suppressed. Overhaul operations involved accessing and knocking down clumps of burned corn stuck in the dryer and removing the large pile of corn from around the dryer. No personnel were injured during the day long operations.
