10/16/18 - Mason field fire, 1000 block S. Diamond Rd
Shortly after 2 PM on Tuesday, October 16, 2018, the Mason Fire Department was dispatched to a grass fire in the 1000 block of S. Diamond Rd. First arriving units reported a large amount of smoke coming from a vacant field well off the roadway. Command requested mutual aid from the Dansville Fire Department for a grass rig. Brush 810 was the first apparatus to arrive and was assigned to start extinguishing the south flank of the fire. Rescue 806 was assigned extinguishment of the burning wood pile that got out of control. Tanker 811 and Engine 809 staged at the street and pulled lines in preparation to welcome the fast moving, wind driven, head of the fire which was coming straight toward them. At one spot the fire jumped the gravel drive and started working in another section of tall grass before firefighters knocked this down as well. The fire was quickly brought under control, then the grass rigs completed overhaul as needed.
