9/3/12 - Onondaga house fire, 3572 Annis Rd
Eight fire departments came together to battle a house fire in Onondaga Township on Monday, September 3, 2012. The Onondaga Fire Department received the call at 5:49 PM, reporting a kitchen fire with flames showing. Personnel were able to see the smoke plume as soon as they started responding and called for mutual aid tankers and manpower almost immediately after their dispatch. On arrival, command reported a fully involved farmhouse very close to a barn. The homeowners met command at the street, reporting all occupants out of the house. Due to the extent of the fire, and difficult access to and on the property, a defensive attack was established with the first priority being protection of the barn exposure. Onondaga Engine 1261 made an attack with handlines at the A-B side of the house while Mason Engine 809 set up in the driveway to use their deck gun on the barn and the D side of the house. The electrical service burned off and dropped over the driveway, obstructing the only clear access onto the property. Leslie Engine 740 stretched lines thru a field past the electrical pole to get to the C-D side of the house. A grass fire extended northwest from the house, with the majority burning up to a small pond. Once the fire was brought under control, Onondaga Ladder 1260 was positioned where Engine 809 was in order to use the aerial to extinguish hot spots in the remains of the home. During the heat of the battle, additional mutual aid was requested for more tankers and manpower. In all, firefighters and equipment responded from the Onondaga, Leslie, Mason, Eaton Rapids Township, Dansville, Delhi Township, Hamlin Township and Stockbridge (SAESA) fire departments. The Lansing-Mason Ambulance Service and the air truck from the Ingham County Sheriff Rescue Squad also responded. There were no injuries.
