5/24/12 - Lansing heavy extrication, Westbound I-96 @ MM 103
At 6:32 AM on Thursday, May 24, 2012, the Lansing Fire Department responded to a semi truck crash with fire on I-96 westbound near mile marker 103. A semi truck, with tandem trailers hauling boulders, lost control and went off the north shoulder of the highway, crashing into several trees in a wooded area that separated I-96 and Edgewood Blvd. As first arriving crews fought the fully involved cab fire, it was determined that easier access could be made off Edgewood Blvd. Command requested additional rigs with saws to assist clearing the dense trees while trying to access the cab to locate the victim. The technical rescue team was also requested to respond to aid in clearing trees and stage with tools and equipment to prepare for recovery or shoring operations. Once the fire was extinguished and it was clear no rescue could be made, all apparatus were cleared from the scene except the tech rescue team. The crew from Station 8 used several specialized rescue tools to complete the difficult task of removing the heavy truck and debris from the victim. It took nearly 5 hours to extricate the driver. Following the recovery, Engine 48 and Rescue 48 remained on scene to assist Shroyer's Towing with preparing to remove the vehicle. The Lansing EOC was activated and arranged for much needed support for the personnel working on the scene. The Red Cross was also requested to respond to provide meals for the workers. Part of Edgewood Blvd remained closed until late afternoon while the debris was cleared from the scene.
