11/1/12 - Detroit vacant dwelling fire, 9399 Schiller St
At approximately 7 PM on Thursday, November 1, 2012, the Detroit Fire Department responded to a fire in a vacant dwelling at 9399 Schiller. This was the second fire on that block that day. Engine 41, Engine 9, Ladder 14, Squad 3 & Chief 6 were due on the box alarm, Chief 6 on arrival requested an additional engine for manpower (Engine 46) and a truck company with a working aerial (Ladder 6 using the closed Ladder 1's truck). This is at the end of a dead end block with a broken hydrant across the street from the house. Engine 41 backed down the block to drop their bundle and go to a hydrant at Schiller & McClellan. Engine 46 backed down an alley from Goethe St to drop their bundle, but those lines were not charged when they could not locate a good hydrant. Firefighters worked to prevent the vacant dwelling next door from burning, which was merely feet away from the fully involved house. When it was safe to do so, Ladder 6 positioned their apparatus in front of the house and used hydrant pressure to extinguish what was still burning.
