9/8/10 - Mason rollover accident with natural gas leak, 1000 block of Hull Rd
On Wednesday, September 8, 2010, at 2:35 PM, the Mason Fire Department responded to a rollover accident on Northbound US-127 south of Kipp Rd. Two occupants received minor injuries when the car they were in lost control while traveling southbound on Hull Rd, which runs parallel to US-127. The car struck a mailbox for 1081 Hull Rd and continued through the state highway fencing before rolling over and landing on it's roof on the shoulder of the highway. An above ground natural gas regulator line was broken off in the collision and a loud high pressure release of blowing gas was immediately evident. Michigan State Police troopers where on the scene right after the collision and evacuated the occupants and witnesses away from the immediate area of the gas line. As a result of the gas leak, it was necessary to close both directions of US-127 and both lanes of Hull Rd for a couple of hours. The fire department also evacuated several houses on Hull Rd across from the scene. A strong wind helped disperse the gas and the incident was quickly mitigated upon arrival of personnel from Consumers Energy. The occupants of the car were treated and transported to the hospital by the Lansing-Mason Ambulance Serivce.
