9/17/10 - Mason plane crash, Jewett Airport
On Friday, September 17, 2010 at 3:18 in the afternoon, the Mason Fire Department and Lansing-Mason Ambulance Service were dispatched to a reported plane crash on the west side of the runway at Jewett Airport. The ambulance service did not have a unit immediately available in the area so they requested a mutual aid ambulance from the Delhi Township Fire Department. Personnel arrived to find a single engine plane, mostly intact, in a bean field just north of the runway. The only occupant on board was still in the plane, he was conscious and responsive and did not require extrication. Media reports from witnesses stated the plane had just taken off at the airport and only reached approx 100 feet when all power was lost and the engine failed. The pilot of the Tecnam P2004 Bravo then attempted to glide back in to the airport. The area was secured and the airport was closed overnight while waiting for the arrival of FAA investigators to determine the cause of the crash. ** PHOTOS IN THIS GALLERY ARE COURTESY OF THE MASON FIRE DEPARTMENT **
