5/6/10 - Mason car vs train with extrication, Kipp Rd & RR Tracks
In the afternoon of Thurday, May 6, 2010, a pickup truck traveling westbound on Kipp Rd west of Barnes St failed to stop for a slow moving southbound freight train. The impact pushed the pickup truck south along the trucks for a short distance until it rolled over just as the train came to a stop. Emergency personnel were dispatched at 3:43 PM, when Lansing-Mason Ambulance Service and the Mason Fire Department arrived, they found three patients sitting in the grass along side the wreckage, with the driver of the pickup truck still trapped in his vehicle. Mutual aid was requested by Lansing-Mason Ambulance for 2 additional ambulances from Delhi Township Fire Department. As it became apparent that this would require a lengthy extrication effort, a helicopter was called in to transport the driver of the pickup. Sparrow Hospital's LifeNet 2 responded. Mason Fire had assistance from the Ingham County Sheriff Rescue Squad for extrication and requested mutual aid for manpower from Dansville Fire Department to set up the landing zone. Two children and one adult were transported by ambulance, the adult driver was flown out by helicopter. All four were admitted with non-life threatening injuries and are expected to make a full recovery.
