12/29/10 - Mason chimney fire, 4103 Toles Rd
Just after 2:30 PM on Wednesday, December 29, 2010, the Mason Fire Department responded to a chimney fire at 4103 Toles Rd in Aurelius Township. Light smoke was showing from the chimney on arrival of the first units. Fire crews split into three teams, going to the basement where a wood burner was located, the attic to check for damage or fire extension, and the roof to help vent and assess. Fire briefly ignited when the roof crew dislodged a large amount of creosote from the chimney. At that time the attic crew reported flames visible from an elbow in the vent and requested an uncharged hose line be brought up just in case there was a problem. The basement crew sprayed extinguishing agent into the chimney from the wood burner and allowed the draft to pull it up and out the roof. The situation was turned back over to the homeowner when there was no longer signs of fire in or around the chimney run.
